One App, Five Postures
iPhone Duo is not one screen. Closed, it is a compact display you can use with one hand. Opened, it becomes a much larger canvas. And because it folds, it can also rest on a surface or stand on its own.
Each of those moments asks for a different interface. So instead of designing one layout and stretching it, we designed SmartGym around five postures.
SmartGym follows along as you move from one to the other. Same app, same data, same workout. The interface simply rearranges itself around the way you are using the device.
Routines, From One Hand to Two Pages
Routines is where every workout begins, so it is where we began too.
Closed
Closed, every pixel counts. So we moved SmartGym's navigation out of the way. The tab bar and the main actions now live along the side of the cover display, within easy reach of your thumb, and your content gets everything else.
And you do not need to open iPhone Duo to train. You can check what is up next, open a routine, review every exercise and start your workout session right from the cover display.
Book Style
Open iPhone Duo slightly, like a book, and SmartGym turns into two pages.
Each half of the display becomes its own page, and nothing sits across the fold. Your summary and your active session take the left page. What is up next and all of your routines take the right.
Open a routine and the pages follow you. The routine and its exercises stay on the left, and the exercise you pick opens on the right, with its animation, its sets and its progress. One page for where you are. One page for what you are looking at.
Fully Opened
Open it all the way and the layout changes again. When iPhone Duo is completely flat, SmartGym stops treating the display as two pages and starts treating it as one large canvas, with a narrower column for context and a wider one for detail.
And during a workout, your session never leaves the screen. We replace the tab bar on the side with a live view of your workout, with elapsed time, calories and heart rate, and with pause and end always one tap away. The Smart Action Button stays right there too, always showing your next step.
History, With Room to Breathe
History holds a lot. Your calendar, your goals, every workout you have logged, Workout Summary, Awards and a full map of the muscles you have trained. On iPhone Duo, far more of it fits on screen at once.
Closed
On the cover display, History opens with your calendar and your weekly, monthly and yearly goals, with Workout Summary right below.
Book Style
In Book Style, the left page holds your calendar, your goals and shortcuts to Workout Summary, Awards and Muscles. The right page lists your workouts, each with its duration, volume, heart rate, calories and the muscles you trained.
Prefer a chart over a calendar? One tap switches the left page to a weekly view of your workouts.
Workout Summary and Muscles follow the same idea. Your numbers stay on one page while the charts scroll on the other. The body map stays on one page while the list of muscles and exercises scrolls on the other.
Fully Opened
Fully opened, the same screens stretch out. Workout cards grow, with a larger view of the muscles you trained and more of the exercises you did. Charts get wider, and lists fit more on every line.
And this is how it all flows together.
HIIT, Hands-Free
HIIT is different. You are not standing next to a machine logging sets. You are moving, usually on the floor, usually a few steps away from your phone. All you need from the screen is what to do and for how long.
iPhone Duo turns out to be an incredible device for that.
Closed
On the cover display, the exercise sits on top and a large countdown fills the rest. Your heart rate, your calories and the workout controls stay on the side.
Fully Opened
Open it and everything scales up. The exercise takes one side, the countdown takes the other, and your elapsed time, heart rate and calories line up along the edge.
Seated
This is where iPhone Duo really shines. Fold it halfway and set it on the floor, like a tiny laptop.
The top half becomes your display, with the exercise and the countdown facing you. The bottom half becomes your dashboard, with a live heart rate chart, your calories, the time you have spent in each heart rate zone and the workout controls.
Tent
Stand iPhone Duo up like a tent and the cover display takes over in landscape. Exercise on one side, countdown on the other, easy to read from a few steps away.
No stand. No tripod. No leaning your phone against a water bottle. :)
One Interface, Not Five
None of this is a separate app, or a special mode you need to turn on. It all builds on the Resizable UI work we introduced with SmartGym 8, the same foundation that lets SmartGym adapt across iPhone, iPad, Mac and visionOS.
iPhone Duo is simply the most demanding test it has ever had: a display that changes size, shape and orientation while you are using it.
An amazing product is the one that doesn't get in the way between you and your goal. However you hold it, it just works.
I created this video with AI, just to have some fun and see SmartGym in action on iPhone Duo.
